Lucy Orta's Remarks

Good morning.  I have the privilege of overseeing the southern Nevada region which the Las Vegas Local Office covers. This area has grown tremendously over the years, and the workforce is becoming increasingly diverse.

Since our Las Vegas office opened in August 2006, we have seen a huge increase in discrimination charges being filed.

This office has seen a 65% increase in total discrimination charges received in just a short two year period from fiscal years 2007 to 2009.  And the numbers keep growing. To give you some perspective, nationally, we've seen just a 13% increase in charges filed with the EEOC.

We are here today to talk about age discrimination.  Our Las Vegas office also has a higher rate of age claims than in the U.S. overall.  Nationally, in the last fiscal year, age claims made up 24% of total charges received.   However, they make up 28% of all charges received out of our Las Vegas office.

As you can see, there is much work to be done, but our office is here to help.

I would like to now turn it over to our Regional Attorney, Anna Park, for details about our settlement.
