Muslim/Arab Employment Discrimination Charges since 9/11
- The EEOC has been tracking charges alleging discrimination
related to the events of September 11, 2001, by individuals who are
- or are perceived to be - Muslim, Arab, Afghani, Middle Eastern or
South Asian or individuals alleging retaliation related to the
events of September 11, 2001. These charges have been designated
"Process Type Z" charges. Some Process Type Z charges are from
non-Muslims.
- Between September 11, 2001, and September 10, 2002, 654 charges
were filed under Title VII with Process Type Z. These charges were
filed against employers in a wide range of industries throughout
the United States. 205 charges were open as of October 1,
2002.
- Of the 654 charges filed, discharge was an issue in 406
charges, and harassment was an issue in 271 charges.
- 449 charges were resolved by the EEOC as of October 1, 2002:(1)
- 95 merit resolutions
- 47 settlements
- 11 withdrawals with benefits
- 37 cause findings
- 6 successful conciliations
- 31 failed conciliations
- 288 closed with no cause findings
- 66 administrative closures
- As of October 1, 2002, 60 individuals
aggrieved by employment discrimination alleged in Process Type Z
charges have received almost $680,000 in monetary benefits through
the efforts of the EEOC during the administrative process.
- From September 11, 2001, to September 10,
2002, the EEOC received 706(2)
charges of discrimination based on Religion - Muslim. In the same
period last year, September 11, 2000, to September 10, 2001, the
EEOC received 323 charges alleging discrimination
based on Religion - Muslim.

2. This number includes some charges with
alleged violation dates prior to September 11, 2001. Such charges
are, by definition, not coded as Process Type Z charges.
