Youth at Work

Welcome to Youth @ Work!

We at the EEOC recognize and value teen contributions to the workplace. From stocking shelves at a bookstore to serving food at a restaurant, every job you do is important to us. Because of that, we want to ensure that your work experience is a positive one.

This website was created for young people, and by young people, to explain the types of job discrimination that young workers may encounter and to suggest strategies you can use to help prevent such discrimination. We hope that if you understand your job rights and responsibilities, you will be less likely to experience discrimination and better able to respond appropriately when necessary.

As new entrants to the workplace, you may be excited to earn your own money, but nervous about understanding the rules, meeting expectations, and working well with co-workers and supervisors. I vividly remember the challenges I faced at fourteen, as I worked to succeed both as a student and an employee, without really understanding the difference or receiving assistance with the transition. I am confident that, because of this website, my sons and all of you will do better!

Enjoy the site! Thank you for your efforts to make our increasingly diverse workplaces fair and inclusive for all.
