EEOC, Embassy of Republic of Ecuador Sign Partnership Agreement

Agreement Continues Ongoing Collaborative Relationship to Fight Discrimination

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Republic of Ecuador today committed to continuing to work together to combat employment discrimination and provide Ecuadorian nationals in the United States information, guidance and access to education and training resources to help them exercise their workplace rights, in a ceremony at the Ecuadorian embassy in Washington today.  EEOC Acting Chair Victoria Lipnic and Ecuadorian Ambassador Francisco Carrión Mena signed the renewal of the national memorandum of understanding (MOU), first signed on Nov. 10, 2015, creating a partnership between the Ecuadorian embassy and the EEOC.

The MOU:

  • Recognizes the joint commitment and awareness of workplace laws and regulations applicable to Ecuadorian nationals in the United States.
  • Specifies that the EEOC will train embassy staff on workers' and employers' rights and responsibilities under the equal employment opportunity statutes that the agency enforces.
  • Specifies the establishment of a system for referring complaints to the EEOC.
  • Creates a system for embassy contact with Ecuadorian nationals who have returned to Ecuador and are owed monetary compensation the EEOC has collected from the responsible employers.
  • Highlights the importance of the dissemination of compliance and educational materials to the embassy's constituency.

"Ecuador is a remarkable country, at the crossroads of hemispheres and steeped in history," said EEOC Acting Chair Victoria A. Lipnic. "I'm pleased and proud that the Ecuadorian government will continue to work with the EEOC to fight employment discrimination and protect the rights of Ecuadorians who live and work in this country."

Ecuadorian Ambassador Carrión Mena said, "The signing of this memorandum of understanding renews the bonds of collaboration between the Embassy of Ecuador, its consulates and the EEOC to promote access of information, guidance and educational resources on employment discrimination issues to all Ecuadorian citizens living in the United States. The Government of Ecuador reiterates its commitment to the Ecuadorian community in this country, strengthening the protection of the human and civil rights of its citizens, with the important joint work with the EEOC.

The EEOC advances opportunity in the workplace by enforcing federal laws prohibiting discrimination in employment.
