Agropur Agrees to Pay $79,000 to Resolve EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Agropur, Inc., a dairy processor and U.S. subsidiary of Canadian-based Agropur Cooperative, will pay $79,000 and provide other relief to settle a federal disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today. EEOC Sues Agropur for Disability Discrimination

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Agropur, Inc., a diary processor and U.S. subsidiary of Canadian-based Agropur Cooperative, has been sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for failing to provide a disabled employee with a reasonable accommodation, which resulted in her discharge, the federal agency announced today. The employee worked at Agropur’s Grand Rapids location with approximately 175 other employees.

Supervalu / Jewel Food Held in Contempt for Breaching Consent Decree Settling Earlier EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

A federal judge has held Supervalu, Inc., which owns the Jewel-Osco chain of stores, in contempt for failing to comply with conditions settling the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) disability discrimination lawsuit against the company, the federal agency announced today.  The judge faulted Supervalu for failing to send written job offers to employees on a disability leave of absence who can be returned to work, as required under a consent decree entered by the court in 2011.  The court also ruled that the EEOC is entitled to discovery and further proceedings to determine whether the company violated the consent decree by failing to provide reasonable accommodations to employees who wanted to return to work from a disability leave of absence.

Grand Central Partnership to Pay $135k to Settle EEOC Lawsuit for Retaliation

Grand Central Partnership, Inc. will pay $135,000 and furnish other relief to settle an employment discrimination lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency said today.  The EEOC had charged that the not-for-profit developer of real estate, offices, and facilities around Grand Central Terminal in New York City unlawfully fired a black Rastafarian security officer for his 2010 complaints of threats of violence and racism and his participation in an EEOC lawsuit resolved in 2009.

Verizon to Pay $20 Million to Settle Nationwide EEOC Disability Suit

Telecommunications giant Verizon Communications will pay $20 million and provide significant equitable relief to resolve a nationwide class disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The suit, filed against 24 named subsidiaries of Verizon Communications, said the company unlawfully denied reasonable accommodations to hundreds of employees and disciplined and/or fired them pursuant to Verizon's "no fault" attendance plans.

Experts Give EEOC Range of Views on Leave as a Reasonable Accommodation

At a Commission meeting today, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) heard a range of views from a diverse panel of experts concerning the use of leave to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.  While the witnesses differed as to some employer and employee obligations, they agreed on the need for clear and uniform guidance from the EEOC.  The meeting, featuring representatives of employees and employers and EEOC officials, was designed to explore the use of leave.
