PRESS RELEASE

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today that it is participating in a new on-line computer service of the Federal government that will provide the public with greater availability to agency information. As part of the Government Information Locator Service (GILS), EEOC will now provide an extensive listing of agency information resources which can be accessed on-line through the World Wide Web at the following uniform resource locator address:

http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/gils/gils.html

"By offering this new on-line service to the public, EEOC will enhance customer service through easier and quicker access to agency information," said EEOC Chairman Gilbert F. Casellas. "The GILS system is yet another example of this Administration's commitment to reinventing government to better meet the needs of those we serve."

It is also possible to access EEOC's GILS free of charge through federal depository libraries by calling (202) 512-1530 or sending Internet e-mail to: gpoaccess@gpo.gov. In addition, you can gain access to EEOC GILS through the Government Printing Office (GPO) Access service, using the following alternative procedures:

  1. Via Telnet - //guest@swais.access.gpo.gov (and select GILS from menu.)
  2. Via WAIS Client - Host: wais.access.gpo.gov
    Database: GILS
    Port: 210
  3. Via dial-up to the GPO Access Bulletin Board - (202) 512-1661 (modem settings N,8,1); type "swais", login as "guest" and select GILS from menu.

After following one of the above procedures, you will be on the GPO Access GILS Home Page. A menu will provide the option of accessing the records of a number of agencies, of which EEOC will be one. To retrieve a summary guide to EEOC's GILS records, select the default Search Full Text (as opposed to the Fielded Search option), select Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for Agency, and type "IRMS.3" for Search Terms. To retrieve all EEOC GILS records, again select the default Search Full Text option, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for Agency, and type "EEOC" for Search Terms.

Should assistance be required, contact the GPO Access User Support Team at (202) 512-1530 or via e-mail at: gpoaccess@gpo.gov

EEOC enforces Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act; the Equal Pay Act; the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in the private sector and state and local governments; prohibitions against discrimination affecting individuals with disabilities in the federal government; and sections of the Civil Rights Act of 1991.
