EEOC Sues Osceola Community Hospital for Disability Discrimination

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a disability discrimination lawsuit this week against Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.  The agency alleged that Bright Beginnings of Osceola County, a day care center operated by the hospital, unlawfully failed to hire a woman because of her cerebral palsy.

Sneakers, Inc. is a Georgia corporation operating athletic specialty retail stores in Georgia and Alabama.

EEOC Sues Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center for Disability Discrimination, Retaliation

An East St. Louis, Ill., non-profit social service agency violated federal law by subjecting an employee to disability discrimination and retaliation, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a discrimination lawsuit filed today.  The EEOC charged that Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center (CBHC) refused to provide a reasonable accommodation to a disabled employee and then failed to rehire her after she was laid off because of her disability, and in retaliation for complaining about the lack of accommodation.

Seventh Circuit Revives EEOC Disability Discrimination Lawsuit

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit reversed the dismissal of a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against airline giant United Airlines Inc. The circuit court overturned precedent to agree with the EEOC that "reasonable accommodation" as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may require employers to provide employees with disabilities with "reassignment to a vacant position" when the employee cannot be accommodated in his or her current position.

The world's largest home improvement specialty retailer will pay $100,000 and furnish other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that Home Depot, U.S.A., Inc. failed to provide a reasonable accommodation for a cashier with cancer at its Towson, Md., store and then fired her because of her condition.

Hawaii Electric Company to Pay $50,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. (HECO) will pay $50,000 and furnish other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that HECO denied an employee a meter reader position due to an eye condition.  HECO, an electric distribution company, is the primary energy provider for the Hawaiian islands.

JES/Genie Temps to Pay $80,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

JES Personnel Consultants, Inc., doing business as Genie Temporary Service, will pay $80,000 to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that JES unlawfully refused to allow an employee to return to work because of his epilepsy.  Genie is a temporary service agency with an office in LaSalle, Ill., that supplies employees to various client employers.
