EEOC Dramatically Reduces Charge Inventory

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) made significant progress in managing the pending inventory of charges in fiscal year 2017.  EEOC offices deployed new strategies to more efficiently prioritize charges with merit and more quickly resolve investigations once the agency had sufficient information.  Together with improvements in the agency's digital systems, these strategies produced an increase in charge resolutions and a significant decrease in charge inventory.

Despite the challenges of sequestration and declining staffing, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) made significant progress toward accomplishing its goals and fulfilling its mission during fiscal year (FY) 2013, which ended Sept. 30. As a result of sequestration, the EEOC furloughed its entire workforce for 40 hours, froze hiring, and reduced its budget for litigation, information technology, travel and contracts for services, among other things.

A BMW manufacturing facility in South Carolina, and the largest small-box discount retailer in the United States violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act by implementing and utilizing a criminal background policy that resulted in employees being fired and others being screened out for employment, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleged in two lawsuits filed today.

Kintetsu International Express to Pay $77,500 to Settle EEOC Disability Harassment, Retaliation Suit

Kintetsu International Express (USA), Inc. – a leading company in worldwide corporate travel – will pay $77,500 to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that Kintetsu harassed and discriminated against a tour coordinator in Maui because of her malignant rheumatoid arthritis.  The lawsuit also alleged the company unlawfully retaliated against the tour coordinator's co-worker for engaging in protected activities.

EEOC Releases Performance and Accountability Report Under New Strategic Plan

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) finished fiscal year 2012 with record high monetary recoveries for victims of discrimination, as well as a significant decrease in its inventory of pending cases, the agency announced in its Performance and Accountability Report  (PAR) released Nov. 16.  This is the first performance report compiled under the standards of the EEOC's new Strategic Plan adopted on February 22, 2012, after comprehensive review and significant public input.  The new plan took effect in March, 2012.

Performance Drilling to Pay $28,000 to Settle Race Discrimination Lawsuit with EEOC

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced today that it settled, for $28,000 and other relief, a race discrimination lawsuit against Performance Drilling Company LLC. Brandon, Miss.-based Performance Drilling provides land drilling services for natural gas and oil exploration and production companies in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida and East Texas. Prior to settlement, Performance Drilling filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
