A Message from EEOC Chair Janet Dhillon on the Passing of John Lewis

John Lewis is a true American hero.  The son of sharecroppers, he spent much of his life – from the lunch counters of Nashville, the Freedom Rides across the South, and the Edmund Pettis Bridge to the halls of Congress - fighting for the rights of the oppressed.  Lewis was a patriot who believed deeply in the promise of this country.  His faith in our founding ideals never wavered, even as he was beaten by the Klan, arrested nearly 50 times, and spent months in jail.  His courage and determination will never be forgotten.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission mourns the passing of John Lewis. His legacy as a civil rights leader, Congressman, and tireless advocate for justice will continue to inspire us as we work to ensure equal opportunity in the workplace.
