Experts Give EEOC Range of Views on Leave as a Reasonable Accommodation

At a Commission meeting today, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) heard a range of views from a diverse panel of experts concerning the use of leave to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.  While the witnesses differed as to some employer and employee obligations, they agreed on the need for clear and uniform guidance from the EEOC.  The meeting, featuring representatives of employees and employers and EEOC officials, was designed to explore the use of leave.

Childress Engineering Settles EEOC Sexual Harassment and Retaliation Suit in Mid-Trial

Richardson, Texas-based Childress Engineering Services, Inc. has settled a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on the fourth day of trial, before the case was submitted to the jury, the federal agency announced today.  The settlement pays the discrimination victim in this case $55,000 and provides extensive injunctive relief to prevent future unlawful conduct.

EEOC Files Its Largest Farm Worker Human Trafficking Suit Against Global Horizons, Farms

In its largest human trafficking case in agriculture to date, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today announced that it filed lawsuits in Hawaii and Washington against Global Horizons Inc., a Beverly Hills-based farm labor contractor, and eight farms.  The EEOC contends that Global Horizons engaged in a pattern or practice of national origin and race discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, when it trafficked over 200 Thai male victims to farms in Hawaii and Washington where they were subjected to severe abuse.  Hundreds of additional potential claimants and witnesses are expected, according to the EEOC.

A labor broker in California, farms in Hawaii and Washington, and a marine services company in Mississippi and Texas subjected foreign workers to severe abuse and discrimination after they were trafficked into this country, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleged in three lawsuits filed today.  These lawsuits follow a Commission meeting, held Jan. 19, 2011, on the issue of human trafficking and forced labor.

Workers with Intellectual Disabilities Abused by Texas-Based Company for Years, EEOC Charges

Hill County Farms, doing business as Henry's Turkey Service ("Henry's Turkey") subjected a group of 31 men with intellectual disabilities to severe abuse and discrimination for more than 20 years, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) alleged in a lawsuit filed today in Davenport, Iowa. The company is based in Goldthwaite, Texas, but the work and abuse occurred in West Liberty and Atalissa, Iowa.

The court-approved settlement resolves the charge of a former employee, Jauronice Hayes, who worked for Brand at its Conoco Phillips facility in Belle Chasse, La.

Houston Businesses Settle EEOC Age Discrimination Suit

Two Houston-area adult-oriented businesses have settled an age discrimination case brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  According to the EEOC's suit, AHD Houston, Inc. and W.L. York, Inc., doing business as Cover Girls, violated the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) by harassing and ultimately firing a waitress because of her age.
