Burger King Franchisee Settles EEOC Sexual Harassment Suit

Kaizen Restaurants, Inc., which operates dozens of Burger King restaurants in Oregon and Washington, has agreed to pay $150,000 and implement preventive measures to resolve a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The lawsuit charged that Kaizen allowed a supervisor to sexually harass a teen employee working at her first job.

Jimmy's Charhouse of Elgin Pays $205,000 to Resolve EEOC Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Jimmy's Charhouse of Elgin, an Elgin, Ill., steakhouse, will pay $205,000 to resolve a sex discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today. The EEOC sued Jimmy's Charhouse on behalf of female employees who charged that they were sexually harassed by restaurant employees, including managers. The case, EEOC v. Jimmy's Charhouse of Elgin, Inc. (10 C 6181), was filed on September 27, 2010.

EEOC Wins Jury Award from Phoenix Subway Franchisee for Pregnancy Discrimination

In a legal victory for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), an Arizona federal jury returned a verdict for punitive damages against High Speed Enterprise, Inc., a corporation that owns five Phoenix-area Subway fast-food restaurant franchises. Federal District Court Judge Roslyn O. Silver had previously ruled that a central Phoenix Subway violated federal law when it refused to hire a job applicant solely because she was pregnant. Thursday, January 26, 2012, the Phoenix jury of seven -- five men and two women -- returned a unanimous verdict finding that Belinda Murillo, the job applicant, was entitled to punitive damages. The jury awarded $7,280 in punitive damages to Belinda Murillo. The court will now decide back pay damages and injunctive relief.

Suffolk Laundry Services, Inc. created a sexually hostile work environment for female laundry workers over the course of many years and then retaliated against these women when they complained, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a federal lawsuit it filed today. The Southampton, N.Y.-based commercial laundry service provides linens to various establishments, including restaurants and hospitals on Long Island.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today announced it has filed an age discrimination lawsuit against Fire Mountain Restaurants, LLC, doing business as Ryan's Family Steakhouse.  The lawsuit charged that Ryan's discriminated against Viola Brown when it reduced her hours, disciplined and suspended her, and finally fired her because of her age, then 79, and in retaliation for her complaints about age discrimination.
