The Office of Commissioner Andrea R. Lucas is seeking law student interns for Summer 2023 at EEOC Headquarters in Washington, D.C. 

Commissioner Lucas is one of five commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.  The Commissioner votes on all matters that come before the Commission, including policy issues, litigation recommendations, federal sector appellate cases, amicus briefs, subpoena determinations, and contracts; issues Commissioner’s charges of discrimination, where appropriate; and performs such other functions as may be authorized by law, regulation, or order.

Internship Requirements

The Office of Commissioner Lucas is looking for 2L, 3L, or LLM law student interns, with strong legal research and writing skills, and a demonstrated interest in administrative, regulatory, employment, and/or appellate law, particularly as it concerns the statutes enforced by the Commission.  Interns will be supervised by an attorney and will have opportunities to produce legal work-product.

Internships are unpaid positions, but the Office of Commissioner Lucas will assist students with their applications for externships, external stipends, or academic credit.

Interns’ Responsibilities

Interns conduct research and prepare memoranda on a range of issues under the federal civil rights statutes and other relevant federal statutes.  Interns assist in reviewing, researching, and making recommendations on the documents presented for approval by the Commission, such as policy guidance, litigation recommendations, federal sector appellate cases, amicus briefs, opinion letters, and subpoena determinations.  Interns also assist with the review and development of potential Commissioner’s charges of discrimination.  Finally, interns may assist in drafting talking points and speeches for the Commissioner, as well as preparation for Commission meetings.
