Hiring Decisions Based on Sex

In general, you may not consider an applicant's sex when making hiring decisions.

There are limited exceptions to this rule. In limited circumstances, you may consider an applicant's sex when making hiring decisions. For example, a small casting company may refuse to consider female actors for a role as a grandfather because a male actor would more realistically portray the character.

These rules can be complicated. You may want to consult a lawyer or contact the EEOC for assistance.
