Jury Awards $240,000 to Muslim Truck Drivers In  EEOC Religious Discrimination Suit

A federal jury in Peoria, Ill., has awarded $240,000 to two Somalian-American Muslims who were fired from their jobs as truck drivers at Star Transport, an over-the-road trucking company, when they refused to transport alcohol because it violated their religious beliefs, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which brought the case.  The trial started on Oct. 19, and the jury returned its verdict the next day after 45 minutes of deliberation.

U.S. EEOC Harassment Task Force to Host Public Meeting, First In Los Angeles

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace, led by EEOC Commissioners Chai Feldblum and Victoria Lipnic, will meet publicly in Los Angeles on Oct. 22. The task force examines the problem of harassment in the workplace and seeks to identify new and creative ways by which it might be prevented and eliminated. Roberta L. Steele has been appointed as Regional Attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) San Francisco District Office effective Nov. 2, 2015. Throughout her legal career, Steele has worked exclusively as a plaintiffs' attorney, with a significant practice in the area of employment discrimination law. For 17 years, Steele worked with a plaintiffs' firm in Oakland, California, focusing on investigating and litigating class and collective actions under federal and state employment discrimination laws, as well as other statutes such as the wage and hour and environmental laws. Since December 2013, Steele has been the Program Director at the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) where she is responsible for the coordination of NELA's amicus, judicial nominations and continuing legal education programs, and public policy work.
