Legal Unit Law Student Externships Albuquerque Area Office

The Legal Unit of the EEOC’s Albuquerque Area Office seeks one to two law students for externships each fall, spring, and summer. Start dates and schedules are flexible, and students may complete the externship for credit or not for credit. Externships are unpaid. Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample.

Legal Unit externs will assist with a broad variety of EEOC trial attorney work. The Legal Unit prosecutes violations of Title VII, the ADEA, the ADA, the EPA, and GINA against employers in a five-state region: Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Utah. Externs will be involved in all aspects of the EEOC’s litigation. Externs will likely have opportunities to interact with charging parties, aggrieved individuals, and witnesses. Externs will gain experience reviewing and analyzing important evidence. Externs will be immersed in legal research and writing both for pre-trial matters and (if applicable) trial for any pending cases. When possible, externs will assist in preparing for depositions and court hearings and will be invited to attend depositions and hearings. Additionally, externs will assist the Legal Unit providing legal advice to the EEOC’s Enforcement Unit, which investigates charges of discrimination. In this capacity, externs will assist with  reviewing and evaluating evidence and may consult on legal issues that arise in  investigations.
