Summer Extern Program US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel, the litigation arm of the EEOC, is headquartered in Washington, DC.  We accept only law students who have finished their second year of law school; we do not accept high school students or college students. We offer only summer externships and have a strong preference for externs who will work the entire summer with us (10 weeks). Externs work primarily in Appellate Litigation Services, which is the office responsible for making appeal and amicus curiae recommendations and drafting and filing briefs in the courts of appeals and presenting oral argument.

Over the past several years, our externs have researched and drafted memoranda on various legal issues for cases in active litigation, including cases pending before the United States Supreme Court; evaluated lower court cases for possible amicus participation; evaluated data pursuant to the investigation of alleged systemic discrimination; and participated in settlement conferences. Externs may also attend the moot court arguments that our appellate attorneys do in preparing for oral argument in the courts of appeals. Occasionally externs do projects working on litigation recommendations and defensive litigation cases. As part of our summer program, externs participate in a “Brown Bag” series with other externs at headquarters where they hear from Commissioners as well as other senior leaders and receive an overview of the various statutes we enforce.

We anticipate similar work this summer. Applicants must have strong analytical, research and writing skills, and should have an interest in employment, discrimination, civil rights and/or public interest law. That interest should be highlighted in your cover letter. To apply, please e-mail a cover letter, resume, transcript, and short writing sample to: julie.gantz@eeoc.gov. The cover letter should be addressed to Julie Gantz at:
