Village of North Syracuse and Towns of Cicero and Clay Settle EEOC Age Discrimination Suit

The Village of North Syracuse, the Town of Cicero and the Town of Clay have agreed to settle a class age discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  Those localities, as well as the North Syracuse Fire Department, the Cicero Fire Department, the Clay Volunteer Fire Department, the Moyers Corner Fire Department, and the Cicero Fire District, will pay a group of firefighters lost pension benefits as well as provide several firefighters increased future monthly pension amounts.

Improving and Measuring Quality of EEOC Investigations Focus of Commission Meeting

On Wednesday, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission held a meeting to develop the agency's Quality Control Plan (QCP).  Development of the QCP was called for in the EEOC's 2012-2016 Strategic Plan.  The plan will revise the criteria used to measure the quality of agency charge investigations and conciliations throughout the nation.  Three roundtables—made up of EEOC front line staff, private employer and employee representatives, and EEOC managers—presented their views to Commission and the chairs of the work group appointed to develop a draft plan for Commission approval.

Supervalu / Jewel Food Held in Contempt for Breaching Consent Decree Settling Earlier EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

A federal judge has held Supervalu, Inc., which owns the Jewel-Osco chain of stores, in contempt for failing to comply with conditions settling the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) disability discrimination lawsuit against the company, the federal agency announced today.  The judge faulted Supervalu for failing to send written job offers to employees on a disability leave of absence who can be returned to work, as required under a consent decree entered by the court in 2011.  The court also ruled that the EEOC is entitled to discovery and further proceedings to determine whether the company violated the consent decree by failing to provide reasonable accommodations to employees who wanted to return to work from a disability leave of absence.
