Cynthia Thomas Calvert

Meeting of April 22, 2009 - on Best Practices To Avoid Discrimination Against Caregivers

Cynthia Thomas Calvert is co-director of the Project for Attorney Retention (PAR). PAR, an initiative of the Center for WorkLife Law at UC Hastings College of the Law, studies work/life issues for attorneys and the retention and advancement of women attorneys. It has developed practical, business-oriented recommendations for law firms to use in cutting attrition through the use of non-stigmatized part-time policies. Ms. Calvert is co-author, with Joan Williams,of Solving the Part-Time Puzzle: The Law Firm's Guide to Balanced Hours (NALP 2004) and Part-Time Lawyer, Full Success: The Lawyer's Guide to Balanced Hours (forthcoming 2009). She is also deputy director of WorkLife Law and a practicing employment law attorney. She was formerly a partner at the Washington, D.C. litigation firm of Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin (now part of Baker Botts), and she has worked full-time, part-time, and flex-time as an associate and partner. She writes and speaks frequently on topics related to women lawyers, work/life integration, and family responsibilities discrimination. Ms. Calvert is a 1985 honors graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center and a former clerk for the Hon. Thomas Penfield Jackson (D.D.C.). She is married and has two children.
