Leonard Hirsch

Meeting of July 18, 2012 – Public Input into the Development of EEOC's Strategic Enforcement Plan

Dr. Leonard P. Hirsch (BA 1976 Pomona College, International Relations; MA 1978, PhD 1980, Northwestern University Political Science) is Senior Policy Advisor at the Smithsonian Institution where he supports the scientific programs of the Smithsonian, with emphasis on global environmental concerns.

Dr. Hirsch is the Smithsonian representative to the US Global Change Research Program and the US Group on Earth Observations, the latter of which he currently co-chairs. He is the USGEO representative to the Forest Carbon Tracking task. He also participates in the Subcommittee on Ecological Systems and the working group on biological/ecological information.

He is active in work with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (as part of the US delegation), and participates in the coordination processes of the Conventions on Combating Desertification, and Climate Change, and the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. He represents the Smithsonian on the US Interagency process for CITES.

Dr. Hirsch is also the head of Federal GLOBE: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Employees of the Federal Government. His engagement with workplace organizing and training has covered many years and the change from legal discrimination to current best practices.
