COMMISSION MEETING TO ADDRESS TASK FORCE REPORTON "BEST" EEO PRACTICES IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR

WASHINGTON -- The report of a recent special Task Force examination of noteworthy equal employment opportunity policies, programs, and practices in the private sector will be discussed at the next meeting of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The meeting will be held Thursday, January 29, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Conference Room (9th floor), 1801 L Street, N.W.
The public is urged to attend the open session of the meeting. The full agenda of matters scheduled for consideration at the meeting are as followed:

  • Announcement of Notation Votes
  • Presentation to former Chairman Gilbert F. Casellas
  • Task Force Report on "Best" Equal Employment Opportunity Policies, Programs, and Practices in the Private Sector (Includes presentations by companies that provided information for the report)

The "Best" practices report is the summation of the Task Force chaired by Commissioner Reginald E. Jones. The Task Force was asked to study and identify various EEO programs used by companies around the country that meet their business priorities as well as their EEO and diversity objectives. The report is intended to provide assistance to employers, especially smaller and mid-sized companies, by describing some initiatives used by other companies in the areas of: Recruitment and Hiring; Promotion and Career Advancement; Terms and Conditions; Termination and Downsizing; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Management Commitment and Accountability; and Other policies. This latter category includes programs or practices not readily identifiable in the previous six groups or where there is an overlap between or among groups.

EEOC enforces Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act; the Equal Pay Act; Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits employment discrimination against people with disabilities in the private sector and state and local governments; prohibitions against discrimination affecting individuals with disabilities in the federal government; and sections of the Civil Rights Act of 1991.
