Progressive North Ridgeville Settles EEOC Race Discrimination Charge

Conciliation process resolves charge against healthcare facility

CLEVELAND – Progressive North Ridgeville, LLC, a healthcare facility in North Ridgeville, Ohio, agreed to pay $5,000 and take corrective action to resolve a race discrimination charge filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.

The EEOC’s investigation found reasonable cause to believe the facility violated federal law by firing an employee because of her race. Such alleged conduct violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race.

Following its investigation, the EEOC facilitated a pre-litigation conciliation process resulting in a voluntary resolution. In addition to monetary relief, Progressive North Ridgeville agreed to provide Title VII training to all its management, administrative, and human resources employees involved in hiring, firing and disciplining employees in Northeast Ohio.

“This resolution underscores the EEOC’s commitment to ensuring workplaces are free from race-based discrimination,” said Karen McDonough, acting director of the EEOC’s Cleveland Field Office. “We commend Progressive North Ridgeville for working with the EEOC to improve its practices and prevent future violations.”

The EEOC’s Cleveland Field Office is part of the Philadelphia District, which has jurisdiction over Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and parts of New Jersey and Ohio. Attorneys in the Philadelphia District also prosecute discrimination cases in Washington, D.C., and parts of Virginia.

The EEOC is the sole federal agency authorized to investigate and litigate against businesses and other private sector employers for violations of federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination. For public sector employers, the EEOC shares jurisdiction with the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division; the EEOC is responsible for investigating charges against state and local government employers before referring them to DOJ for potential litigation. The EEOC also is responsible for coordinating the federal government’s employment antidiscrimination effort. More information about the EEOC is available at www.eeoc.gov.
